Sure you can expand your HDD space by spending $60, and that's certainly cheaper than paying legally for all the games, but it's still nowhere near the free/practically free threshold. When you're talking about paying for Blu-Ray blank media and a burner it's not "cheap" anymore. Piracy in the form of CD or DVD media is damn near free. Internally, laptop hard drives are cheap too.Ĭheap is a very relative term. What space issues? Most games can be played off external USB hard drives. With emulators, codecs, and customizations, the PS3 is going to have the best shot at realizing that goal. This is just starting to get interesting!" KaKaRoToKS said.ĪThe Big Audacious Goal of all three consoles is to be THE home entertainment system - not just a video game machine. "Eventually we’ll get some more options added to it in the future. Including, in all likelihood, the ability to play pirated games. But obviously this is just the beginning KaKaRoToKS and others will be adding much more functionality for those who decide to go the custom route. Currently, the only change is that you will be able to add "install package files" to the game section of the Cross Media Bar. So what does the custom firmware do? Not much at the moment. "The advantage here is that you can do it for any firmware, if you want to keep version 3.41, then give it the 3.41 update, if you are on 3.55 already and can’t downgrade, then run the script on the official 3.55 firmware and it will create a modified 3.55 firmware," he explained. Instead, the tools will be made available so that anyone can transform the official firmware into a custom one with just a bit of tweaking. He goes on to explain that, due to copyright issues, he won't actually be releasing the firmware to the public.

"Thanks to the tools made by the fail0verflow team (and thanks to sven in particular for his work on the pkg/unpkg tools), the first 'Custom Firmware' is now available for the PS3!" KaKaRoToKS wrote on his blog. However, at present, it doesn't do a whole lot.

Building on that work, another hacker has created the very first custom firmware for the game console. But that's NOT an option right now.Last week a group of hackers, working under the name fail0verflow, managed to hack the PS3 thanks to its poor implementation of public key cryptography.
#REPLACE CUSTOM FIRMWARE PS3 HDD PLUS#
If I had PS Plus I would just restore it to factory defaults. Is there maybe a tool which will let me boot from USB so that I can backup my stuff? I only want my save games. How the hell do I get my stuff backed up? I already read the file system is encrypted. I also don't have ps plus, so my save games are only on that console. I just bought the console in 2014 and still have a lot of games to play and I don't want to lose my save games. Last I wanted to change from harddisk to internal flash memory. It keeps hanging at the "preparing" screen and nothing happens. But what ever I choose, rebuilding the database or restore the file system, it does not work. Later when I come back there's either a black blank screen or the console shut itself off. After that it takes aaaaages to get somewhere. Since then I only get the message that my file system needs to be restored. So I cut the power to restart the whole console. I recently watched something on Amazon Prime and paused, when I wanted to continue to watch it froze and I tried to quit the app and restart it.
